Schoenrock Award bestowed on Devinder Mangat

GO BACK TO MAIN NEWS PAGE
Devinder S. Mangat, MD, of Cincinnati, Ohio, was named recipient of the 2007 Larry D. Schoenrock Distinguished Service Award. Established in 1997, the annual award recognizes an individual who has made a significant contribution to the integrity of the examination and certification programs for facial plastic surgery.

“Larry was such a good friend to facial plastic surgery and to me,” Mangat said upon learning of the award. “He grew up just a few yards from where I now live and it is a tremendous honor to be included in the list of past recipients of this distinguished award.” As one of the “early believers” in the ABFPRS and the high professional standards that our credential represents, Mangat has the distinction of being in the first class of ABFPRS diplomates, earning his lifetime ABFPRS certification in February, 1991.

Mangat’s strong advocacy for the board and its standards led to his election as its’ sixth president in 2003. During his presidency, the four components for the Maintenance of Certification in Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery® (MOC in FPRS®) were finalized and he and the rest of the ABFPRS Board of Directors and many Senior Advisers were in the crew of “test pilots” on June 22, 2007, to take the first MOC in FPRS® examination. After completing the rest of the program’s requirements, Mangat will now be in the first class of ABFPRS diplomates to receive their MOC in FPRS® certificates.

Mangat’s commitment to facial plastic surgery dates back to his early involvement in AAFPRS courses and meetings during his fellowship with Gaylon McCollough, MD. He went on to become an AAFPRS fellowship director in 1987 and has seen almost all of his 21 fellows complete ABFPRS certification requirements. “I’ve always known that ABFPRS is the biggest gain for facial plastic surgery ever, without any doubt,” said Mangat. He set out to enhance appreciation of the ABFPRS credential during his presidency of the AAFPRS from 1999 to 2000 and dedicated himself to increasing the numbers of ABFPRS diplomates before, during, and after his tenure as ABFPRS president from 2003 to 2006. The ranks of ABFPRS diplomates now total over 850 and are expected to reach 900 after the next certification cycle.

In addition to swelling the ranks of diplomates, Mangat has also worked to ensure the Board’s financial stability through his own generous contributions, as well as soliciting funds from his peers for the ABFPRS examination program. He has also served as an ABFPRS examiner in all but two years since achieving his certification in 1991.

“Larry Schoenrock and I often spent time together at meetings talking about the ABFPRS and its future,” related Mangat. “I know he would be thrilled to see that our Board’s credential has become synonymous with the highest professional standards that he so proudly championed.”

Nominations for the 2008 Schoenrock award should be addressed to the ABFPRS Executive Committee in care of ABFPRS, 115-C South Saint Asaph Street, Alexandria, VA 22314, or email Schoenrock Award@abfprs.org.
