26 More surgeons become ABFPRS diplomates
At its June 26 meeting, the ABFPRS Board of Directors determined that the following 26 surgeons had met all of the requirements to become ABFPRS diplomates. The action brings the total number of diplomates to 990.

Ira D. Papel honored as 2009 Schoenrock Award Recipient
Ira D. Papel, M.D., has been chosen to receive the 2009 Larry D. Schoenrock Distinguished Service Award, which will be presented during the AAFPRS Fall meeting in San Diego. The American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery grants the award annually to an individual who has made significant contributions to the facial plastic surgery examination program, its financial security, and/or its support within the specialty, organized medicine, and state legislative and regulatory bodies.

Dana S. Smith, M.D. honored as 950th ABFPRS Diplomate
When asked why facial plastic surgery beckoned as a career calling, Dana S. Smith, M.D. did not have to ponder very long. "I still have the typed operative reports from two hernia operations that my grandfather, an otolaryngologist, performed on me when I was a small child. As a matter of fact, both my mother's parents were physicians— my grandmother was my pediatrician until she retired. Although my grandfather completed an otolaryngology residency at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, he immediately had to leave for World War II after he finished his training. When he came back after the war, the medical need was so great he instead worked as a general surgeon in a small town with my grandmother. (Smith is happy to report that his grandfather is still alive and doing well at 95-years-old!) I appreciated my grandparents' dedication to helping others and witnessed the profound difference physicians could make in patients' lives. Since then, I have never wavered from my decision to pursue medicine as a career," he relates proudly

Major Richard Barnett and Lieutenant Commander Robin Lindsay tie for top score on ABFPRS examination to win 2009 Anderson Prize
Drs. Richard Barnett and Robin Lindsay are tied for the highest score on the 2009 ABFPRS examination and will be awarded the Jack R. Anderson Prize for Scholastic Excellence at the AAFPRS Fall Meeting in San Diego, California.

ABFPRS sets requirements for maintaining certificates
Requirements for the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery's maintenance-of-certification in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery program (MOC in FPRSTM) are now available for review on this website. (Click here for more information). Diplomates who hold time-limited certificates will have to meet these requirements in order to maintain ABFPRS certification. Lifetime certificants may participate in the MOC in FPRSTM program voluntarily if they wish to demonstrate periodic recertification to patients, hospitals, and others.

ABFPRS to require office surgery accreditation
Surgeons seeking initial certification by the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ABFPRS) will have to meet a new requirement, effective January 1, 2007: They must operate in an accredited facility when performing procedures using Level II anesthesia or above.
