Surgeons who have completed AAFPRS Foundation fellowships in facial plastic surgery must complete the same requirements for certification as do residency-trained surgeons. However, they complete requirements in a different order.
First, fellows must take the ABFPRS examination as a completion requirement for their fellowship.
To register for the exam as a fellow, click here.
Second, when fellows accrue sufficient experience and complete other requirements for certification, they may complete the application for certification.
All requirements are spelled out in the ABFPRS Booklet of Information. The Booklet of Information is part of the Application for Certification, which also includes the Sequential Operative Log. These materials are available on-line only.

Photo Documentation Standards
Should photo documentation be requested by the ABFPRS Credentials Committee to supplement an application, Photo Documentation Standards (PDF) outlines the labeling and views necessary to meet ABFPRS requirements.
Study materials
To prepare for the exam, it is recommended that surgeons
review the Examinee's Guide
to the Written and Oral Exams (PDF). In addition, they
should download a copy of the ABFPRS
Reading List (PDF), which is a bibliographic listing of topics covered by the prior year’s examination. . Surgeons may also take advantage of the Practice examinations, which are available by clicking the link at the top of this page.
Additional study materials and courses are available through
the Educational and Research Foundation for the American Academy
of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. Click here to download a copy of the AAFPRS Curriculum Bibliography. NOTE: by clicking these links you will be directed away from the ABFPRS website.
A word of advice
Before beginning to complete the application, many surgeons find it helpful to contact the ABFPRS office to speak to staff members who can answer questions and help ensure requirements are understood. Incomplete applications will not be forwarded to the Credentials Committee for review.
